Early Ford Bronco

Early Ford Bronco for sale in the UK

The 1966 to 1977 Bronco is the most closely examined American 4x4 in the collector market, and the one where the difference between a good car and a costly one is hardest to see from photographs.

What to know before you buy

The things that decide whether a car is worth the money.

Uncut matters more than paint

The single largest value divide in the early Bronco market is whether the rear wheel arches have been cut for oversized tyres. A cut Bronco can be beautifully presented and still sit in a different price bracket to an uncut one. We photograph the arches, the rear quarters and the inner structure on every Bronco we assess, and we say plainly when a car has been modified. Restoration quality can be bought later. Original sheet metal cannot.

Where the rust hides

Broncos rot from the inside. The rear floor pans, the tailgate lower seam, the front footwells and the frame section above the rear spring hangers are the first places we look, in that order. Cars that spent their lives in Michigan winters are usually poor candidates whatever the paint suggests, which is why we buy from dry southern and western states wherever possible and record the vehicle's registration history.

Drivetrain and originality

The 289 and 302 V8 cars command a premium over the 170 and 200 straight sixes, and manual transmission cars with the original Dana 20 transfer case are the strongest performers at auction. We note where a drivetrain has been replaced rather than presenting a running car as a matching numbers one.

Bringing one to the UK

A Bronco built before 1976 usually qualifies for the reduced import rate applied to vehicles of historic interest, and a pre 1986 car is exempt from UK road tax and MOT once registered as historic. We handle shipping, customs entry, DVLA registration and the paperwork trail so the car arrives ready to use rather than ready to argue about.

What we look for
  • Uncut rear arches and original quarter panels
  • Documented dry state history, not just a dry state sale
  • Solid frame above the rear spring hangers
  • Honest disclosure of any drivetrain change
